An electronic cigarette, also known as an E-cig is a personal vaporizer that contains a few simple elements, a battery (housing circuitry), a heating element called the atomizer, and a mouthpiece, which is called the cartridge. The E-cig provides inhaled doses of nicotine to the user by way of a vaporized solution called E-liquid. The nicotine solution within the cartridge is vaporized by the atomizer into a wispy cloud that is almost identical to real smoke. Although not considered to be a smoking cessation these devices are an outstanding alternative to traditional cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products such as, cigars and pipes. In addition to nicotine delivery, the vapor produced also provides a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke, while no tobacco, smoke, or products of combustion are actually involved in its operation.
The E-liquid is a solution mainly comprised of nicotine diluted in propylene glycol or glycerin, along with assorted flavorings added to mimic the taste of traditional tobacco, or popular cigarettes brands. Many other flavors are also available that may appeal to the user. Some of these other flavors include menthol, caramel, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, and many others.

Propylene Glycol is a food additive found in many foods we consume today, such as food coloring, toothpastes, mouthwash, flavorings, and it is also used to keep food, medicines and cosmetics moist. It is considered as generally safe and it is the element that helps to create the vapor that simulates smoke. Because of its low chronic oral toxicity, propylene glycol is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as a direct food additive. Cases of propylene glycol poisoning are related to either inappropriate intravenous use or accidental ingestion of large quantities by children.
Some other uses for propylene glycol include. (Described by Wikipedia)
- As a moisturizer in medicines, cosmetics, food, toothpaste, mouth wash, and tobacco products
- As a solvent in many pharmaceuticals, including oral, injectable and topical formulations. Notably, diazepam, which is insoluble in water, uses propylene glycol as its solvent in its clinical, injectable form.
- In smoke machines to make artificial smoke for use in firefighters’ training and theatrical productions.
- As a solvent for food colors and flavorings.
- In hand sanitizers, antibacterial lotions, and saline solutions.
Electronic cigarettes do not burn or contain tobacco, are not flammable, and they do not produce any smoke. They also deliver no secondhand carcinogens to surrounding people. Therefore the E-cig does not share the restrictions involved with smoking tobacco. Please be courteous to the owners and the patrons of your establishments, and acknowledge that the electronic cigarette is a new device that is unfamiliar to many. The questions arise because the vapor released almost exactly mimic’s smoke. If someone asked about your e-cig please kindly inform the individual(s) of what the device you are using is all about. People are always inquisitive of these exciting new products and usually are 99% receptive. I believe at this time only two states have instituted the same restrictions on the E-cig as on tobacco; please check with your state official to see if your state is included.
Electronic cigarettes are intended for current tobacco smokers over the age of 18. These devices are for a smoker who is looking for an alternative that does not contain carcinogens, like tar or carbon monoxide, or produce the ill effects incurred by inhaling smoke. These products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, and habit forming. The intention is to use the different nicotine levels provided in the liquids as a step down method starting at a high level working your way down to zero nicotine, and eventually abstinence.
Restricted use for,
- Minors under the age of 18, or any age restrictions that apply to smoking within the state, which you reside.
- Current non smokers.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone with sensitivity to nicotine or any other ingredients in the inhalant.
These products are relatively new to the states and the FDA has not yet offered a conclusive opinion about them. Therefore the FDA does not approve them.
The cartridge is the mouthpiece of the e-cig. It contains a white poly fiber wadding material, which holds the nicotine liquid solution called e-liquid. These cartridges or carts as they are otherwise known, are refillable and reusable until the integrity of poly fiber wadding within them breaks down and becomes frayed to the point where it appears it should be replaced.
This is a very common question. The answer, much like smoking cigarettes, depends on the frequency of use. If a person is vaping (term used for inhaling vapor) lightly the cartridge can last an entire day. While a heavy vapor (person who inhales vapor) will need to refill his/her cartridge several times a day. Many manufactures claim a single full cartridge will last as long as a pack of cigarettes. This is not true; therefore you should carry your liquid with you to refill the cartridge as necessary. Although the cartridge along with the poly fiber wadding can be removed and cleaned by rinsing under water it is advised to replace them after a couple days of use for sanitary reasons.
The main indicator that a cartridge needs refilling is vapor production. When the vapor production from your e-cig reduces or the flavor develops a burnt taste this is a good time to check your cartridge. Just remove the cartridge and check that the poly fiber wadding, if it looks dry it needs refilling. The wadding should remain saturated (without pooling) for optimal performance. Please note that if your battery is running low this will diminish vapor production also.
Remember the dripping method (term used for adding e-liquid) is the most cost effective method. This is done rather than replacing a cartridge as soon as it gets low. Just remove the white poly fiber wadding material from the cartridge (with tweezers or whatever works) and add 2 to 3 drops of e-liquid in the bottom of cartridge, then replace the wadding material. This is done to ensure even saturation throughout. After replacing the wadding add 3 to 4 drops on top of it, just enough to wet the wadding material throughout without pooling. Finally just one drip on the wick inside of the atomizer and your making vapor! Just drip on top as necessary to maintain wadding saturation. If you would like to switch flavors or your starting a new day, remove the white poly fiber wadding material, soak up the excess E-liquid in a paper towel, reapply the e-liquid flavor of your choice, and enjoy a fresh start.
This depends on the model E-cig you are using and the frequency of use. The 510 model known for it awesome vapor production should give you approximately 3 to 4 hours of moderate use out of its 3.7V 150mAh batteries. If you are out all day you will want to carry a spare battery or use a personal charging case. If you’re using the 905 screwdriver model, it operates a 3.7V 900mAh battery and should last all day without a backup. When a battery is running low it will be indicated by constant flashing LED before it quits working all together.
